SUSTENANCE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The most dangerous system from a moral point of view is sustenance. Hundreds of willing men who are anxious to do light work are forbidden to do it. 'These men are not fit to do hard labourer’s work.. Surely there is plenty of light work in the cities and suburbs they could do. The real solution of the problem to my mind would be to give them extra money weekly and keep their minds and bodies active. A very old saying is lamentably true: “Satan finds some mischief still, for idle hands to do.” Hoping sustenance men will have increased pay and some useful light work to do. —I am, e tc., ‘ ' Observer.
