WOMAN ATTACKED

EARLY MORNING BURGLAR SHOE USED OH DEFENCELESS HOUSEWIFE Desperate resistance was made in the early hours of this morning by a woman to an attack in her bedroom by an intruder, who'belaboured her with a slipper or shoe, inflicting two black eyes, and stole_ a small sum of money. The injured woman is Mrs Jessie Cleland (37), residing at 10 Birchfield Avenue, North-east Valley. Her husband, William Cleland, a baker, left home at 3 a.m. for his work at Mr J. C. Rigby’s bakehouse at the Gardens. An hour later Mrs Cleland was awakened by a man in her room. ‘ She screamed, and thjg» man attacked her, hitting her over the face with what she thought was a shoe or slipper. Airs Cleland put up a determined resistance, but her eyes were blackened, and she was otherwise assaulted before the man' desisted. Her cries for assistance alarmed her young son in an adjoining room, but neither the screams of Mrs Cleland or of her son disturbed the neighbours. Suffering badly from shock, Mrs Cleland was afraid to leave her. room, and she thought the man was still in the house, but about 5 a.m. the milkman called and she reported the attack. Neighbours and the police were called in, and an examination of the house proved that a sum of 8s or 9s had been stolen. , ~ , , Airs Cleland, who was later attended by Dr Porteous, is suffering from shock and her injuries.
