COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING. Tlio I’oinn.inla County Council held its monthly meeting yesterday at I’urtubcllo. Present were the chairman (Cr il. Macandrew), and Crs J. Cross, W. I). Stewart, ,1. T. Irvine, T. ■S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. Hellycr, J. W. Harbrow, and D. J. S. Robertson. COR RESP 0 N D H N CE.

A request was received ironi seven ratepayers of the W'yclili'e and Cape .Saunders districts, and also from three residents of Mount Cnarles, asking that roads bo repaired.—The meeting resolved that the necessary metal bo obtained from Weir’s quarry, and that the work bo commenced in a week.

A legal outlet from his property at Otakou was asked for by Mr W. Taiaroa.—The request was declined, owing to tho cost of forming the road. Consequent on the removal of slips on tho road at Craigmore township, tlio Education Hoard asked the council to assume control of the roads.—Referred to the member for the riding. Permission to install septic tanks at their respective residents at Macandrew Ray was asked l for by Messrs .1. M'Phcrson and M. A. Foote, Dunedin. —Roth applications wore granted conditional on tho compliance with the usual conditions. The council’s consideration 'of a scheme for supplying water for tho district was received from a section of tho members of the North-east Harbour Ratepayers’ and Householders’ Association.—The council agreed that the scheme was outside its jurisdiction, the application being declined. In order that motor vehicles could use Beach street for access to sections, the North-east Harbour Ratepayers and Householders’ Association asked that Beach street, Macandrew Bay, bo fprined.—Referred to the engineer. Attention was drawn by the Northeast Harbour Ratepayers and Householders’ Association to tho Hooding that had occurred at the Macandrew Bay Hall, and it asked that tho position be rectified.—The engineer reported that the work had been carried out.

A further communication was received from tho association asking whether the council intended to proceed with tho felling of the bine gums at Macandrew 11ay.—Cr Hellyer said that the object of the removal of the trees was the formation of a road.— On the chairman’s motion it was decided not to cut down the trees in the meantime.

The removal of trees by the council near her property on the Peninsula road was requested by Mrs M. Alichie, .Musselburgh.—The application was refused.

Plans for the proposed improvements at Boro's Corner on the DunodinPortobcllo main highway, the cost of which was estimated at £2,050, were forwarded by Mr T. M. Ball, the Highways Board’s representative on the No. 17 District Highways Council. The board had agreed to lind 75 per cent, of the amount.—Cr Cross contended that the cost of the work was excessive. his view being upheld by the council, which decided to decline to make its contribution towards the carrying out of the work. Stating that provision for a liberal o-rant hail been made in the estimates, Mr T. M. Ball, Public Works engineer, complained of the poor condition of the Cape Sanndcrs-Portobello road, and asked when the council proposed to submit (ilans for its consideration.—The Chairman stated that the plans would bo submitted in a week’s time. The council's support of a remit that if a union of coputy employees was formed, it should bo one embracing all county employees, and should be distinct from any other union of workers, was asked by the • Tauranga County Council. —The meeting decided to support an alternative remit. Advice that the annual meeting of the 7s ew Zealand Counties Association would be held on July 17 was received by the council, which was asked to forward remits for consideration.—Noted. The treasurer of the Happier Days Art Union forwarded a cheque for £ls, to be used for the general relief of distress at Portobello.—Deceived.

Pending approval of the board’s estimates by the Minister of Health, the Hospital Board requested the council to arrange to pay the levy at the same rate as last year.—Received. Appreciation of the council’s donation of £3 3s towards its funds was voiced in a letter from the secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association.

A complaint that applications for various improvements to be carried out to his road at Sandymount had been referred 1 to the engineer for attention and that he had not rectified the damage was made by Mr T. Fleming.—lt was decided to carry out the improvements.

A suggestion that if the council granted a sum of money to the City Council hooks could be supplied to all schools on the Peninsula was embodied In a letter from Mr T. M‘Vie, the teacher at the Portobcllo School. The cost of issuing books, at the ratio of one and a-quarter books per child, would be £3O. The writer stated that as this appeared a large sum, the upperclasses of each school be supplied. Such a restricted scheme would cost approximately £l2, and the applicant asked whether the council would grant that sum.—The letter was received. Mr W. T. Rowlands (Macandrcw Bay) wrote applying for permission to place a petrol tank under the road and to erect a pump in front of the corner of his new building, instead of on the present site.—Permission was granted provided the applicant forfeited any right in the present site. FINANCE. A financial statement placed before the council stated that the riding balances at March 31 were as follows, the expenditure to date being in parentheses:—Otago Heads, £5 19s 8d (£5 19s GcT) ; Snndvmonnt. £lll 11s 5d (£l9 17s 3<1); Higbcliff, £255 Is lOd (£36 13s I0d) : Tomahawk, £7O 5s 3d (£6O 11s 3d) ; North-east Harbour, £376 18s 8d (£l3l 19s fid) : Broad Bay, £l9O 19s 7d (C 77 9s 3d) ; Portobcllo, £l2O, debit balance (£S 5s scl). The cash book balance was £156 7s 7d, accounts to he passed for payment were £1.752 IGs Id, accounts already paid wore £1.066 17s lid, and the debit balance was £1.142 os. Amounts due to the council wore:— Refund of relief wages. £707; arrears of rates, £500; highways subsidy, £250; and heavy traffic foes, £3oo—a'total of £1.757. The statement was received. ENGINEER'S RFPORT. The county engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) reported, as follows on work carried out in the county during May Otago Hoads Riding.—One new culvert bad been laid on the Main road at Carom's Rock. The widening of Pipikaveiu road was still in hand. Watertables bad been cleaned and slips removed irom the Cape Saunders road. Portobcllo Riding,-A new culvert had been laid at. Geary’s Point on the .Main road. Metal bad been raked in on Gill's corner lo Gravesend road.

Water-tables were cleaned on the; Por-tobello-Wickliffe Bay road. Fifteen chains of side ditch had been cleaned on the Allan’s Beach road. * Broad Bay Biding.—Cleaning of water-tables in Broad Bay was in hand. The casing of the corner of Wilson’s road was well advanced. The forma-tion-should be completed within a fortnight. North-cast Harbour Biding.—-Im-provements had been effected to the grades and widths of _ portions _of Marion street. The junction of Marion and Jane streets had been widened. An 18in culvert had been lengthened in Howard street and the road widened over the culvert. The building to permanent levels of t!ie junction of the Main road with District road was nearing completion. Water-tables had been cleaned on Victoria road and on Abbotsford road, Wavorlcy. Tomahawk Biding. Maintenance metal was spread on the Main road through tho township. The approach to the bridge on tho Valley road had been graded, and a low corner near Mr Ings’s house cleaned out and brought up to grade. The culvert at the lastmentioned corner had been extended. Highcliff Biding.—Maintenance metal was spread from the city boundary towards the cafe, water-tables cleaned, and tho usual grading carried out. Sandymount Biding. Water-table cleaning had been done on tho Bid-dcH’s-Hoopor’s Inlet road. Screenings had been spread on portion of the hill at tho top of Seal Point road. Further screenings would bo spread immediately. The report was adopted. RANG KIPS BKPORT. The county ranger (Mr K. Campbell) reported that he bad impounded 10 head of cattle found wandering on country mails during May.—Adopted.
