Chapman, M.P., stated: — “ A chain stores firm, with shops in many towns of the Dominion had given its staff a week’s notice, and offered to re-employ them on a temporary basis for the apparent purpose of evading the application of the policy of the Government respecting the wage standards of shop assistants. Chain grocers are covered by an award which provides that there must ha le senior drawing not less than £5 per week, for the first junior or bov, and , r ea ch boy thereafter, there must be three additional seniors, but before shop can employ five juniors or boys it must employ eleven seniors.
