FIRE IN CONVENT

WASHHOUSE AND BATHROOM DAMAGED | t [Per United Press Association.] | DARGAVILLE, June 1. At 7.15 this morning the fire brigade received a call to a fire at St. Joseph’s Convent (Mangawhare). A full muster of the brigade responded promptly. The fire started in the and spread along a covered way into the back portions of the convent building. A bathroom and pantry were damaged and the outside walls of th* building. The washhouse is a total! loss. Fortunately there was an absence of wind, otherwise the task of the brigade would have been much more difficult. The building and contents were* covered by insurances, but the amounts are not available. There were five sisters and five boarders living on the premises. At the time of the outbreak they were at early morning Mass. ■ , , The building was officially opened by the late Bishop Lenihan in December, 1907.
