BAG SNATCHER
OLD WOMAN ATTACKED ! OFFENDER TRIPPED AND SEIZED [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, June 1. An assault on a woman aged 80 years and an attempt to steal her bag earned six months in gaol to-day for John Henry Sewell Nisbet, aged 24, of no fixed abode. When he appeared before Mr Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court Nisbet pleaded guilty ta drunkenness, to assaulting Ellen Bowley, and to attempting to steal a purse and contents, valued at £3 ss, from Mrs Bowley. He was sentenced to three months with hard labour on each of the main charges. Senior-sergeant Calwell said that aa Mrs Bowley entered the women’s rest room in the Square Nisbet stepped out and pulled her fur necklet over_ her face. She cried for help, and Nisbet snatched her purse. As Nisbet ran off he was tripped by a man outside and held until the police arrived. Nisbet had only arrived from New .York 18 months ago, and had no convictions in. New Zealand.
