BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
BETTER QUALITY AT FIRM VALUES From a quiet opening the sale of fat cattle at Burnside to-day quickly picked up last week’s prices, and fro.m then on remained firm at late rates. At the commencement of the sheep market ewes were a little dearer than at last week’s sale, and there was every indication that the ,best wethers would- also bring better prices when their pens w ; ere reached., hat lambs also experienced a firm sale, while store cattle and bacon pigs tended to rise in value. Showing the best quality yarded tor some time, the entry of fat cattle numbered 275 head. There was a fair sized penning of prime heavy bullocks, and a representation of prime medium sorts, while the number of light grades was small. Good cows and -yheifers were also forward in larger numbers than usual, several lots being specially fine. Fortunately there was a smaller penning of light and weedy stuff. The sale opened quietly at prices, if anything, slightly belqw those of last week, but values quickly firmed to late rates.' ; There was no further alteration throughout the rest, of the sale. A Waitahuna ' client, Mr Joseph Crane, sent in the draft that commanded the highest price of the sale, this being £l2 15s. Taken as a whole the quality in the fat sheep pens was only fair. The number forward was approximately 1,500. There were only two trucks of wethers that could be classed as good, the remainder being made up of medium sorts, -with a number of light and unfinished stuff. Prime heavy ewes accounted for a large percentage of the total yarding, and some of the entries were particularly attractive. Others were of medium grade, and the lightweights were not so plentiful as usual. Bidding was keen from the start, all grades of ewes advancing in price. No decent wethers had been offered at the time of going to press, but country 1 butchers jyese expqsters jvere
buying at 'increased ; limits,- so- it was considered that values would remain firm throughout. . >'■ - There was a medium-sized entry oj, fat lambs numbering. some 760 head* The quality , generally was fairly good, being much superior to that displayed a week ago. Some pens contained extra line quality,' but the majority was made up of medium-weights,' with a small percentage of lights. The sale was a good' one, butchers and exporters operating at late rates. , Some three pens of steers, a few two-year-olds, and "a balance .of odd., lots comprised the store cattle yarding.' The abundance of available feed had its effect on prices, which were higher than last week. Small ~ two-yeaipold steers brought from £4 10s to £4 15s T and heifers sold to £3 16s. A small entry of approximately 40 head of vealers was about half the size of last week’s penning, and proved insufficient for requirements. Prices were 5s to 10s a head dearer than last week, the best selling to £2 10s. Others brought from £1 10s to £2. A small yarding of the usual assortment of boner cows sold at late rates. . . ’ ;..j_ A line of bacon pigs from beachst brought the highest prices of the pig sale to-day. These sold .to £3 10s, and while others were a little under this price, the- average value a pound was approximately. Cd. Porkers were worth about the same amount a pound. There were 124 fats and 70 stores in the tdtdl yarding. - - ■ ■
