NORTHERN CEMETERY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —While taking a walk last Sunday I took the bush track from Logan Park which leads into the' Northern Cemetery, and judge my surprise to sec the condition existing there. The front part is beautifully kept and laid out; the back portion is a disgrace to any city—paths overgrown with weeds, and the graves likewise, convolvulous choking everything. The traveller passing over this place, once blossoming in every part like a garden, once_ exhibiting the care which ruled within its gates, finds solitude and desolation now stamped on the face of most things which meet the view; and here lie many of the pioneers of Otago, forgotten. At the entrance to each gate is a dump, and I noticed several inside; certainly a track is cut between the rank weeds. The dells leading from the cemetery are a spot of beauty;_ the gardens and summer house beautiful; the fernery is a sight to see; and one can only lift one’s hat to Mr Tannock and his able assistants. Reverting to the cemetery, why not hand this over to his care? I am sure he would place a few men there, and in a few days a general clean-up would be made. It is not my wish to cast any reflection on the cus‘todian; he has his hands full. It is purely an oversight, and I am sure attention will be given, and this will create a better atmosphere.—l am, etc., F. J. O’Neill. January 29.
