AUCKLANDERS ON HOLIDAY
ANNIVERSARY DAY CELEBRATIONS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 29. In’ gloriously bright weather, Auckland to-day is celebrating the ninetysixth anniversary of the founding of the city and province. The most spectacular event is the annual regatta on the placid waters of the harbour, where 300 boats—a record number—are racing keenly in a breeze which is improving as the day progresses. Additional interest is given to the regatta by the presence of four southern contestants in the Sanders Cup competition, which was suspended today to enable the boats to compete for the Lipton Cup and Ross Cup. Among the .Auckland boats competing in the general events is the Iron Duke, which is still owned by the Jellicoe family. Thousands of excursionists left the city this morning for picnics on the beach and other resorts. The Takapuna Race Meeting at Ellerslie was largely attended, as also were the provincial tennis championships at the Stanley street courts, and keen interest is being displayed in the club cricket, wherein there were bright batting displays.
