Neilson, M.P., returned to Dunedin last night from Wellington,; where he was a member of a deputation which urged the Minister to introduce legislation providing for daylight baking. Mr J. Robertson is at present an inmate of an Oamf.ru hospital. - A motion of sympathy with him in his illness was carried by the Otago University; Council yesterday afternoon. Professor 6. E. Thompson and Mr J. Robertson were yesterday appointed the Otago University Council’s representatives on the High Schools Board. Advice has been received by air mail from Trinity College of Music, London,, that Miss Ruth Sell, pupil of Mr John Leech, has passed the fellowship examination in singing. Dr H. Buchler’s application for an extension of the Lady King scholarship for 12 months, recommended by the Dean of the Medical Faculty and approved by the chairman of the Professorial Board, was granted by the University Council yesterday. Mr T.-H. M‘Combs, M.P. for Lyt(telton, arrived by the first express yesterday to attend the annual conference of the Institute of Chemistry. Congratulations to Sir James Hutchison, Mr Willi Fels, and Professor A.6. Strong on being honoured, by Hia Majesty in the New Year honours list were extended by the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) at the special meeting of the Otago University, Council yesterday afternoon. Mr Morrell said that Sir James had always taken a live and real interest in the Otago University;! they knew Mr Fels by his generous gifts, and he was sure they would bo pleased that the work of the home; science department had been recognised by the honour conferred on Professor Strong. A motion that the congratulations of the council should be extended to the three persons named was carried with applause. Delegates to the annual combined conference of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and the New Zealand section of the ; Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland arrived last evening, and, accompanied by their wives, were entertained at supper at the Savoy by the Dunedin branch. Included among the delegates are Professor F. P. Worley, of Auckland University College, who is president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry., and. Mr G> A. Lawrence, of Wellington,, chairman of the New Zealand section; of the Institute of. Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland. Mr J. .A. Glendining (general secretary of the institute) and Mr W. Donovan (chief Government analyst), axe also attending the conference. , Latest registrations at the Grand Hotel include Mr F. J. Campbell (Montreal, Canada), Mr and Mrs A. E., Jordan (Honolulu), Mr L. B. Bolton s Moss (Sydney), Dr A. Hans Newton and Mr J. Montgomery (Christchurch). Professor F. P. Worley, Mr and Mrs H. Edwards (Auckland), Miss C.
