SOOTY SANTA CLAUS
BOY FALLS DOWN CHIMNEY ESCAPES WITH NEGLIGIBLE INJURIES [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 29. To fall down a chimney while playing at Santa Claus and escape with only bruises (and a thick covering of soot) was the experience yesterday of Jack Becconsall, an eight-year-old boy who lives at Sullivan Avenue. The boy climbed on to the roof and stepped into a chimney. He raised his bands and slipped and fell to the bottom of tbe chimney, where his fall was broken by a draught plate which was closed. If it had not been for this plat© it is probable tbpt his injuries would have been more serious. A sister of the boy ran to a neighbour’s place for assistance, and soon there were about 10 men endeavouring to free the child. It was found impossible to get him out, however, until the whole of the fireplace had been taken, out.
