OTAGO RETAINS SHIELD

Further Successes at Hamilton I Another Record to Miss Purdie S; W. Jarvis Achieves Treble [Special to the * Star.’]

HAMILTON, January 28. The final session of the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships .in the Hamilton Municipal Baths tonight yielded two Dominion 'records by Misses Nawi Kera (Rotorua) and Islay Purdie (Dunedin) and an unbroken series of remarkably close finishes'. From all the excitement the Otago team again emerged the holder of the War Memorial Shield, with a majority of five wins over Southland and South Auckland. Miss Islay Purdie added glory to Otago swimming by breaking the intermediate girls’ New Zealand record and equalling the senior ladies’ record in winning the 100 yards girls’ championship, her second title of the meeting. The other two contributing to the consummation of the ‘ retention of the shield were S. W. Jarvis and B. Ingram. SPEEDIEST LADY SPRINTER. The success- of Miss Purdie, the 16-year-old girl, in lowering the record of Miss Edna Rainey (Auckland) to 64 4-ssec entitled her to ranking as the speediest sprinter of her sex yet _ dedevolped in New Zealand, taking into consideration the slightly heavier water conditions, Miss Farquhar’s _ senior standard having been created in fast salt water at Auckland. Miss Purdie is one of the most expert stylists imaginable, arid simply skims through the water with a perfect co-ordination of movement. Miss Purdie has been racing only (wo months for that rise to fame. She beat Miss Gotlieb (Wellington) , a promising swimmer, by 4Jyds. A CLOSE CALL. . Not for a long time has Syd Jarvis been so near to defeat as ho was in the final of the 100 yards intermediate boys’ championship. He contrived a slight lead over the first 65yds, but (he whirlwind finish of Alan Pascoe (Auckland) nearly cost him the title, as, fighting desperately, he achieved victory by a mere touch, and had a narrow escape, but it was marked "by a great victory and a gallant loss. The time was 2 3-ssec slower than the record of N, Crump (Auckland). Jarvis-enters senior ranks soon, leaving a high admiration behind him for his sportsmanship. He is a credit to his province/ 1 ; .. .. Pascoe has still another year in the division. Otago’s third victory came through the agency of the diminutive B. Ingram, who won the junior boys’ diving championship. Every dive enabled him

to increase his lead from his opponents, who, unlike him, did not show finish. Otago has invariably led New Zealand at diving, and when the young champions of to-day have benefited from constant experience on .the springboards they will embellish Otago’s record.

AMAZING FEAT BY MAORI GIRL, In a special attempt on the 100yds New Zealand junior girls| record she established on Saturday night, the 13-year-old Maori prodigy, _ Miss Nawi Kera. succeeded in reducing her time by one second to CG l-ssec. 'Unpaced, as the rules required, she gave a dazzling exhibition that elated the crowded galleries, and confirmed the ooinion that New Zealand has never possessed a swimmer as chpable of great deeds in international contests. Just how highly endorsed she is is shown by the fact that had Miss Islay Purdie (Dunedin) not subsequently lowered the 100yds intermediate record to 64 4-ssec, thus equalling the national senior ladies’ mark, Miss Kera’s time would have been the fastest ever hihde in! fresh water, even bv seniors. Her tendenev to leave the course caused her to become entangled with the cork ropes repeatedly, and, allowing for this hindrance and the slightly heavier fresh water, she would undoubtedly at least equal Miss M.

Farquhar’s senior record in the salt water Auckland Tepid Baths, reputed to bo the fastest hath in New Zealand. Prominent Auckland swimming officials stated to-night that Otago will be supreme in New Zealand swimming within a year or two. These boys and girls from Dunedin all possess style which is an object lesson for others, by which they cannot help attaining important laurels. The wholehearted support of the crowd during the 100yds junior boys’ championship was with }J. Morrison (South Auckland), the small Maori from Rotorua, who clung doggedly in the lead at the end of the first lap, and was victorious in 65 2-ssec by Ciii from J. Cameron and P. M’Jnnos (Southland), who swam a. dead-beat. Morrison's clocking was 5 2-ssec outside Syd. Jarvis’s record, but he is an exceptionally promising hoy who will clip many seconds off his time with maturity. SHIELD POINTS.
