In the latter case they must be brief. Miss Lilian Columb has returned from a tour abroad. Mrs Michell, England, is the guest of Mrs C. W. Birch, Eglinton road. Mrs E. Cropp returned this afternoon from a visit to Christchurch, Mrs H. L. Thomas, Wellington, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs T. K. S. Sidey, Tolcarne Avenue. Mrs J. Fraser and her daughter, Doris, of Taihape, are at present visiting relations in Dunedin. Misses Nancy and Anita Brown, of All Day Bay, Kakanui, have arrived in Dunedin on a short holiday visit. Miss Norah Bayly, of South Australia, is visiting her cousin, Mrs P. J. Priest, St. Clair. Mrs P. E. Clqrk and family, who have been spending the holidays in Timaru, have returned to Dunedin. The Misses Molly and Hilary Ilunnerstrum have returned from a holiday in the North Island. , The Misses Sara and Maud Watkins, of Tennyson street, will leave Wellington on February 6 by the lonic on a tour abroad. Mr and Mrs Penfold and the Misses Phyilis and Thora Prebble, of Christchurch, are visiting Dunedin, and are staying at Hazelbank, St. Clair, Mrs I. Mathesou • and Miss Ethel Matheson left by train on Monday for Balfour, where they will attend the school jubilee. The Misses Margaret and Isabel Matheson left on a cycling trip to Balfour on Sunday morning, and will also attend the' school jubilee. v The engagement is announced of Margaret, eider daughter of Mr and Mrs J, Watt, late of Dunedin, now of Roxburgh, to George, second son of Mr and Mrs A. Dacker, Harbour Terrace. Miss Constance Lee, who has been hoiidaymaking with her parents at Wanalka, Queenstown, and Alexandra, returned to Dunedin at the week-end. The Misses Blackmore, Colina Falconer, Jeanette Ewing, and Pat Davis (England) returned to-day from the walk to Milford Sound. Mrs David Christie, of Shanghai, China, who is on a tour of the world, is at present staying with Mrs John Hamer.
The Misses Permin, who have been visiting Wellington and other parts of the North Island, have returned to their , home. Mr and Mrs Charles Columb returned to Dunedin on Tuesday after eight years’ residence abroad. They are the guests of Miss Kathleen Greenslade, George street. The engagement is announced of John Henry Mac Lean, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. F, Edmond, Mount Lodge, Dunedin, to Winifred Cleeve, second daughter of Mr and Mrs C. C. Cox, Highgate, Roslyn. Lady Finney of Dorset, England, who is at present visiting New Zealand, was the guest of the executive of the Otago Women’s Club at afternoon tea. Mrs N. Manhire returned this afternoon from a visit to Nelson, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs Norman Pavitt, whose guest she has been. Staff members of Messrs Scoullar and Chisholm met at afternoon tea last Thursday to farewell one of their number, Mrs M'lvor, on her resignation after giving faithful service to the firm for the past 27 years. Mr J. Spence Nicol (managing director) conveyed the firm’s appreciation of her work and regret that she was leaving, while he also extended the staff’s good wishes for health and happiness in her retirement. He also presented Mrs MTvor with a fireside chair, bearing a suitably engraved plate, as a token of esteem from her business associates.
