POLICE COURT

MONDAY, JANUARY 27. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.)‘ DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined 10s, in default 24 hours imprisonment. REMANDS GRANTED. Charles James Adams (36) and Donald Andrew Sutherland (31) were charged with the theft, on January 26, of a lawn mower valued at £4. the property; of Stanley Fleming Greenslade. Senior-sergeant Packer applied for a remand for a week. Several other matters had to be inquired into. “ Does that apply to both of us? asked Sutherland. Senior-sergeant: Yes. When the question of bail was mentioned. Sutherland suggested: “ Make it pretty light, your Honour.” The remand was granted, and bail was granted each in self £10; a condition being that they reported daily to the police. INTOXICATED MOTORIST. Hugh Rankin ,Kydd (34) . appeared for sentence on a charge of driving a, motor car while in a state of intoxication. He was remanded in custody; from last week. Mr J. G. Warrington reiterated that Kydd’s license meant his bread arid butter to him. Accused was anxious to take out a prohibition order so that there should be no recurrence of the offence. ■ . .. Kydd was convicted on taking out a prohibition order, and. was fined £5 and ordered to pay medical expenses (£1 Is). ... ' - “ The question of the suspension of the - license is a difficult one in this case,” said the Magistrate; “ The accused depends for his livelihood on hii license. ■ His conduct has been good, and he is described by the police as a worker. 1 propose adopting the unusual course of adjourning the question of the suspension of the license until June 22, leave being reserved for the police to bring the matter before the court at any time.” DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE. George William Wilhelmson, who admitted that he had driven for. five years without a license, was fined 10s and costs. UNLICENSED WIRELESS. A rehearing was granted of the charge against Neil Johnston (Mr C. M. Barnett) of being in possession of an unlicensed wireless set. The case was further adjourned for a week to allow of arrangements being made for the payment of the fees. GAMING CHARGES; The hearing of charges against Victor Farry ;.(Mr C. J. L. White) of laying totalisator odds and of carrying on the business of a bookmaker was resumed. Giving evidence, Farry said Harper was a customer at his- shop. They talked about racing and a few days later Harper asked if he could have a bet. When defendant said he could not take bets. Harper asked him to lav a bet. Two or three bets, from which accused derived no profit, were made and Harper received the dividend. Later, he became suspicious of the man and told him that he was trying to make a 1 bookmaker of him. ■ Farry denied that he acted as an agent- _ , The charges were adjourped till Friday to give the magistrate an opportunity of perusing the evidence. MAINTENANCE. Further evidence was, given in tli* complaints. for affiliation and maintenance orders against Ronald Georg* Vickery and the case was further adjourned for one week.
