HEDGEHOGS AND SCIENCE

Hedgehogs are the latest creatures to be pressed into service by medical science in the .war against the common cold,, says an English newspaper. Hitherto, '.scientific study of the cold has been gravely handi. capped by the lack of a’ suitable experi. mental animal. Human volunteers and chimpanzees, while definitely susceptible, cannot be employed to solve most of the major problems of the disease, and great interest therefore attaches to the discovery by Dr J. T. Edwards that the hedgehog can be infected with the human cold. His investigation to date has revealed that when the germs of three cases of acute human colds were innoculated into hedgehogs the. animals in a number of instances developed acute catarrhal symptoms. The discovery is all the more promising in - that previous work on the ferret and mouse, both of whom are susceptible to human influenza, had, as Dr Edwards confirms, drawn a complete blank as regards infection with the common cold.
