FAMOUS VIENNA CHOIR

SEASON COMMENCES TO-NIGHT Tn-night at 8 the celebrated Boys’ Choir of the imperial Chapel in Vienna will commence a four-nights’ season at His Majesty’s Theatre under the direction of Messrs J. and N. Tait. Owing to having to fulfil overseas engagements the choir’s Dunedin season is limited to four nights, but in response to requests from a number of schools matinees have been arranged for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next. Children will be admitted at half-price to all performances. The programmes to bo presented here are divided into three parts. First is a selection of classical and medieval sacred music from the choir’s own incomparable repertoire. Some of the Motets of Callus, Viadana, Do Victoria, and others which will be sung here, have been in constant use by these Wiener Sanperknaben since the days before Columbus set out upon his travels. The second part of each programme is devoted to a classical operetta by one or other of the great Viennese composers—Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. These are given in appropriate costume and setting, and the acting and singing of the boys in these items have aroused the greatest enthusiasm throughout the tour. In the final section, which is mostly made up of Austrian folk songs and modern music, prominence is given to the characteristically Viennese waltz songs of Johann Strauss, including the favourite ‘ Blue Danube ’ and ‘ Tales from the Vienna Woods.’ Plans and day sales for to-night’s concert are at the Rialto, Rattray street. Plans for the remaining performances will bo at the D.I.C. from Monday morning.
