The Wai-iti, which has been in service at Lyttelton as a coal bulk for several years, was a three-masted barque which traded mainly out of Auckland in the intercolonial service, with timber and coal. She was previously known as Signe. She has the record of having made several smart passages across the Tasman. Her conversion" to a hulk in 1907 resulted from an accident in the Kaipara River, She was being moved prior to loading when the tow line carried away, and when the tide receded she capsized. Captain M‘Cor■mick was in charge of the Wai-iti at the time of the accident.

Captain H. Monro, of the Canterbury Steamship Company," superintended the work of righting the vessel, which occupied about two months. It was tho intention of her owners to continue employing her in the intercolonial trade, but after loading at Kaipara and coming to Lyttelton she was purchased by tne Union Company and converted into a hulk.

Captain Gillings, at present in command of the C, and D. motor ship Port Wyndham, was second mate of the vessel on her voyage out from Home.

_ The Wai-iti was purchased by A. H. Turnbull and Co. from Norway, but the vessel was originally British. She was then known as the Duke of Argyle. She was built in 1865 by Denny and Rankin at Dumbarton, and is of 995 gross tonnage.

Captain MacDonald, the purchaser, was in command of the barque Northern Chief when she made a recoffd voyage of 42 - days 10 hours between San Franqisco and 'Auckland,,. " !-—T-iffi— - . ' ■■ .'U, ATLANTIC BLUE RIBAND. V

The “ blue riband ” of the Atlantic is to take form and substance as a silver gilt trophy, the gift of Mr H, R. Hales, M.P., and when completed it will consist of two finely-modelled figures surmounting a globe on an onyx plinth. Tho uppermost figure" is symbolical of speed overcoming the force of the Atlantic and urging forward a passenger liner. The Atlantic is depicted on the globe by pale blue enamel, the route being indicated by a line of red enamel. The four winds are symbolised by four sailing vessels, and on a girdle encircling the globe are four enamelled panels illustrating the Great Western, Great Eastern. Mauretania, and Res. Supporting the symbol of speed is a representation of Victory, while seated figures of Neptune and Amphitrite adorn the ornamental base.

The choice of ships for the panels seems to us rather curious, comments ‘ Syren and Shipping Illustrated ’ prior to the Normandie’s record trip. The Mauretania is understandable; her fame is such that she should appear in any gallery of Atlantic speed record holders, hut we believe we are right in saying that neither the Great Westtern nor the Great Eastern ever won the “ bine riband,” while the Rex, although she holds the distinction of being the fastest sMp on the Atlantic, does not really enter the contest as it has always been understood. For many years the standard of comparison has been the crossing between New York and a Channel port, and the record for this is held by the Bremen and Europa. BENHOLM ARRIVES. The A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Benholm arrived from New York via northern ports this morning. After discharging Canadian and United States cargo she is expected to be despatched to-morrow for Australian ports to complete. WAITAKI FROM MELBOURNE.
