—Ministerial.— The Hon. R. Masters (Minister of Industries and Commerce) arrived by car from Christchurch *yesterday, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. This morning he was engaged in departmental business, but there were ho deputations to him of a public nature. Accompanied by his private secretary (Mr K. M. Sleight), the Minister will leave for Invercargill to-morrow xnorning.

The mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) has returned from a brief electioneering campaign in the Clutha district. At Clinton on Saturday night he spoke to a, large audience. Mr G. W. Reid, of the Railways Board, left for Wellington this morning. Mr W. T. Hannerhan returned to Christchurch by this morning’s express. * Mr F. H. R. Nevill travelled to Oamaru this morning. Mr J. T. Gillan left for Christchurch by the express this morning. Sir James Grose, general manager. National Bank of New Zealand, arrived by the first express from the north on Saturday. This evening ho will be present at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, when he’ will deliver an address. He will leave on his return to Wellington by tomorrow’s express. At the annual meeting of the Otago Bowling Club Ltd. on Saturday night the president' (Mr J. Henderson) referred to the approaching departure for Wellington of Sir N. Facer, a member of the club. He expressed the good wishes of the club and presented Mr Facer with a case of pines. _ The staff of the Fletcher Construction Company Ltd., which is at present engaged in remodelling His Majesty’s Theatre, gathered at the conclusion of the day’s work on Thursday to say farewell to Mr F. Vorrath prior to his departure with the All Black Rugby football team for England. Mr Bert Hall, foreman in charge, presided, and! after congratulating Mr Vorrath on his selection expressed the best wishes of the staff for his success during the tour. He then presented him with a solid leather engraved suit case. Mr G. Hesselyn, Mr J. Hodgkinson, Mr S.Ikin, and Mr J. Granger also congratulated Mr Vorrath. An old-time resident of the Waitahuna district, Mr Frederick EUis, J.P., for many years in business there as a general blacksmith, passed away on Thursday last. He was a man of outstanding character and of a very kindly and obliging disposition, and his familiar figure will be greatly missed in the district where be was so long and so widely known. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family of one son and two daughters. Has remains were interred in the Waitahuna Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the funeral procession being a large one, bearing testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community.—Lawrence correspondent. Mr Douglas Brewer will arrive hack from Raratonga to-morrow. In. reply to a petition from Palmerston. /North residents, presented by a deputation this morning* the mayor, Mr Hansford, agreed to contest the Palmerston seat at the General Election as an Independent, stating that he Would reserve the right to support any party-whose policy coincided with his Association.

Mr R. Coulter, Mayor of To Aroha, has been selected as the Labour candidate for the Waikato seat at the General Election (says a Wellington Press •Association telegram).

A Gisborne Association message records the death of Miss Evelyn Maud Williams, daughter of the- late Mr J. W. Williams, member of Parliament from 1873-79, arid a sister of Mr K. S. Fogarty, and W. Tuck (Invercargill).
