BOXING

AMATEUR TOURNAMENT ' With the New Zealand championships coming off in Dunedin early in October, the local association is sparing no effort to give the amateurs as much competition and encouragement as possible. The first open amateur and novice tournament of the season is to be held at the Pioneer Hall next Wednesday night. Already large entries have_ been_ received from the local schools in addition to quite a number from Milton, Oamaru, and Kaitangata. The majority of boys competing in the open class are already in fine form, and the novice class, having drawn satisfactory entries, should also provide some strenuous and interesting contests. Owing to the large number of entries already received it is possible that the association will have to extend the tournament to include Thursday, - 25th, in addition to the 24th. If such is the case, notification will be made through Press advertisement.
