FISTICUFFS THREAT

m EDUCATION BOARD MEMBERS QUARREL [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 17. A breeze occurred at a meeting of the Education Board when two members rose to their feet together and, shouting the word " liar " at eaca other, mutually accepted each other's challenge to settle matters outside in the time-honoured method. The difference arose when Mr T. W. M'Donald, moving a motion, made a statement which Mr 0. H. Nicholls challenged. The exchanges of what were the re» verse of compliments began to fly in spite of the chairman's calls*, of "Order!" Mr M'Donald then accused , Mr Nicholls of never having anything constructive to offer, and mutual recriminations followed thickly. ' Th« chairman (Mr W. V. Dyer) insisted on the withdrawal of the word "liar," and Mr M'Donald complied, admitting that he had spoken in the heat of the moment. Several members suggested to Mr Njcholls that he, too, should withdraw what he had said rather than incur the necessity for drastic action, on the part of the chairman. In reply, Mr Nicholls said that Mr M'Donald was like a red rag to a bull. "I am that bull," he added, "and I would[ say things to him that I would not say to other members. What I said I meant, but I am prepared to withdraw." . The meeting then continued m comparative harmony. ,
