UNEMPLOYMENT

A PROTEST [Per United Press Association.! WHANGAREI, July • 18. A public meeting convened by the Whungarei Unemployed Workers’ Association last night unanimously carried the following resolution:—“That this meeting of citizens vigorously protests against the injustice of paying the unemployed in this district a lower rate than those in the larger towns, and points out to the Minister that the more attractive conditions in the cities are having a serious effect on the balance of population in country centres.” The Chairman of the association said ho would hold mootings weeky if necessary until the demands were met. The "deputy mayor, who presided, gave his assurance of the continued support of the borough council, and a similar promise was given by the Chamber of Commerce, which is talking the matter up with the Minister. The Rev. Mr Steele (Anglican) and Father Herring vigorously espoused the men’s cause.
