—Vice-Regal.— Their Excellencies _ the Governor'* General (Lord Bledisloe) and Lady Bledisloe left for Christchurch this morning by the second express, a large gathering of citizens, in addition to civic authorities, assembling on the railway station to tender them an informal but sincere farewell. Among those present on the platform were the mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) and Mrs Cox, tha town clerk (Mr G, A. Lewin), Crs J. J. Marlow ('deputy-mayor), A. H. Alien* and J, L. MMndoe, Dean. Cruickshank, and Mr W. J. Morrell (Chancellor of the Otago University). As the train drew out the assembled crowd joined in the singing of ‘ Auld Lang Syne,’ followed by three cheers for the departing vice-regal visitors. Their Excellencies, who are accompanied by Captain Tweedie, will spend to-night in Christchurch, and will cross to Wellington tomorrow night.

Professor R. Lawson returned to Dunedin yesterday morning by the Mahenoi after a holiday visit to Melbourne. Sir Alexander Roberts, who has been on a business visit to Dunedin, was a passenger by yesterday’s express for Tunaru, on his return to Wellington. Mr A. Walker, accountant in tha Dunedin office of the Union Steam Ship Company, returned yesterday by the Maheno from a holiday visit to "Melbourne.

Sir Robert Anderson, of Sydney, arrived in Dunedin by the express from the north yesterday afternoon. He is on a private visit to relatives, and will leave on his return journey on Monday , Mr C. B Heard, general manager of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd., will arrive in Dunedin to-day. _ He attended the opening of the society’s new building in Wellington, and is now engaged on an inspection of all New Zealand branches.

Admiral R. E. Byrd, accompanied by 1 , Mrs Byrd, arrived in Dunedin from Wellington by yesterday afternoon’s through express. He is staying at the Grand Hotel, and will remain in Dunedin until after the departure of the expedition ships, Bear of Oakland and Jacob Ruppert. They were received by, Lord and Lady Bledisloe at the Excelsior Hotel this morning, when His Excellency congratulated Admiral Byrd on) his successful expedition to the Antarctic and on Ms safe return after all the perils and hardships he had experienced.

The Rev. R. L. Fursdon, who has accepted the pastorate of the Cavershara’ Baptist Church, arrived from the north by this afternoon’s express. Congratulations' upon his being knighted were conveyed to Sir Percy, Sargood by the Dunedin branch of the Overseas League at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The president (Mr W,i R. Brugh) referred to it as “ a wellmerited honour.”

Messrs W. H. Brent, A. J. Allen, Keith Ramsay, and W. H. Whitaker, delegates from Dunedin to the South Island sawmillers’ conference to be held at Christchurch, travelled to that city, by train today.

.Mr W. G. Riddell started this morning on his return journey to Wellington.

Mr Norman Wood, manager Brown, Ewing’s, left this morning by train for his holiday at Wellington. Mr T. C. Coull, who loft with the Dunedin bowlers to play at Christfhurch, will go to Wellington, on business before retumning. Mr Ralph Malcolm, called to Wellington on business, travelled by the 11.35 train to-day. Captain Innes-Taylor, of the Antarctic party, went by train from Dunedin to Christchurch to-day. " Sir Cecil Day, official secretary to the* Governor-General, who came to New Zealand twenty-five years ago as assistant private secretary to Lord Islington, lias been granted leave of absence ini order to visit England. He leaves with Lady Day on May 10, and expects to be absent till the end of the year, reports a Wellington Press Associationmessage.
