RAILWAY GUARD’S DEATH

COLLAPSE ON TRAIN . DUE TO HEART FAILURE That death was due to heart failure the result of degeneration of the coronary vessels was the verdict returned this morning by the coroner (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) at the adjourned inquest touching the death of Duncan Cameron James Murdoch, a railway guard, who collapsed on '&• train at Henley on February 12 and died within a few minutes. Sergeant Thom conducted proceedings for the police, and Mr G. M. Lloyd appeared on behalf of the relatives. Dr D’Ath gave evidence of having conducted a post-morten examination of the body of the deceased, and said that_ from his examination he was of opinion that deceased died from heart failure due to degeneration of the coronary vessels. To Mr Lloyd: Witness said that to a person suffering with this disease some light exertion might determine death, but on the other hand he might go on performing strenuous tasks for years without any ill effect. Evidence was given by Constable O’Shaughnessy, who said that from inquiries made, he learnt that the deceased complained at Henley that ho was suffering from acute indigestion and that he would. ask a porter for hot water and baking soda. A few minutes later this porter called out -to another porter that the deceased had collapsed and died'within a few minutes. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the .medical evidence.
