. Hubert Turtill, the New Zealand sprint champion, unwound a a great burst of speed in the final event of the day in the Geelong centenary cycling carnival on December 15 (says the ' Sporting Globe ’).
Turtill and L. W. Hill,, the other New Zealander, were nicely placed in the field for the Jast lap when Hill punctured. Hill had worked to the front for a lap prize just before he punctured. '. ■ Coming from well in the pack,' Turtill made , a break on'the field early in the last lap, and was followed by FW. Stuart, the Australian road champion.l
, He made the pace the limit, and with Stuart hanging on gamely won comfortably in the five miles scratch invitation race. J. Fitzgerald was a good third , G. J. Flickert took five s lap prizes, and J. Ballantine. a former amateur champion, displayed brilliant track tactics and gave a fine exhibition in carrying off four lap prizes) After [winning his first heat of the centenary mile handicap off scratch by a tyre from K. Webb (Tasmania), W. F. Stuart maintained his form in the final and defeated G. Eddy (90yds) by half a wheel. Stuart’s time was 2min lOsec, the fastest for the distance..
Referees called off the riders in the third heat, including Hubert Turtill and F. P. Kennedy (Tasmania) for unsatisfactory Tiding. They made amends later, and when the event - was rerun Turtill and Kennedy provided one of the best finishes seen for the day. Mowing down the field. Turtill gradually got up, but Kennedy’s kick at the line won' the heat by inches in 2min Msec.
