CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. The national athletic trials to enable the selection to be made of the New Zealand team to visit Melbourne to compete against the representatives of Australia, Great Britain, and I* inland next month were held at Lancaster Bark to-day. Although the failure of most of the North Island athletes who were nominated to take part robbed the meeting of much interest, the New Zealand champions over every distance from lOOyds to one mile were challenged for the right of selection, and this made the contests exciting. H. K. Braiusby (Auckland), hop, step,, and jump and long jump. F. Sharpley (Hawke’s Bay), 120 yards hurdles, 100 yards,’ and 220 yards low hurdles, (if held). T. .1. Crowe (Wellington), high jump, hop, step, and -jump, and long jump. For the three miles A. R. Wilson (Auckland) and C. H. Matthews (Canterbury) will be asked to run in a fur--ther trial, possibly at Napier, on a date not yet fixed. If there is a walking race at the games at Melbourne I, Driscoll (Hawke’s Bay) will make the trip.
