DUNEDIN’S MORE WORK CAMPAIGN

THE APPEALS COMMITTEE To a ‘ Star ’ representative this morning Mr W. A. Flavell, chairman of the Appeals Committee of the more work campaign, stated that there had already been an encouraging response to the appeal to Dunedin citizens to “ make more work.” “ With the help of literature posted to nearly every home, the publicity given by a sympathetic Press, and assistance accorded by the Broadcasting Board,” said Mr Flavell, “ no one should now be in doubt as to the aims and objects of the campaign. What has been done in other places in the direction of creating work can surely be excelled by the Dunedin citizens. It is the duty of my Appeals Committee to undertake the task of securing the promises that work will be put in hand or purchases made that will create work. I am confident that in this city the committee’s task will be a light one, aided by the spmpathetic desire of everybody in the community to help his less fortunate fellow, and a willingness to assist to demonstrate that Dunedin can lead New Zealand in the matter of generous help.” Mr Flavell emphasised that the scheme had no political significance, was not a subsidised scheme of Government or municipality, and was conducted regardless of class or creed by the most representative body of citizens available. “ The unusual feature of the campaign is that it aims at securing the return of craftsmen to their normal occupations, and that this object will be sought by simple and effective means. It is impossible for any honest citizen to suggest that there is not something he or she is in need of, be it what it may. Glance down the list on the back of the 1 More Work Campaign ’ folder. Does it not suggest other avenues of spending money to the benefit of the spender!-' And all the campaign requires is that each and every citizen promise to spend some sum, However little, on some work or good during the next three months which he or she would later spend in any case. Not only will value be received for the expenditure, but as a result of the combined ex-

penditure of the members of the community the number on the local register of unemployed will be assuredly decreased. “ We hope and believe better times are coming. Building permits issued show an increase. Deposits in the savings banks show improvement. In many other directions there is an upward swing. Let us therefore unite in an endeavour to tide over what we hope are the last stages of the depression. “ The direct function of the Appeals Committee is to let no responsible citizen fail to make his promise to spend.During the next few weeks each house from which no registration card has been received will be called upon by one of the many willing helpers who are assisting the committee. This work can obviously be shortened if householders fill in the registration card immediately and post it to the organiser. “ No assistance, however small, no task, however light, should be overlooked. City and suburban tradesmen and craftsmen will willingly give advice and quotations. The emphatic and concerted request of the Appeals Committee to every citizen of Dunedin is ‘ Do something about it AND DO IT NOW!’ ”
