TASMAN CUP SINGLES HEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 26. Id the Tasman Cup contest Australia won lour singles this morning; consequently the toursomes this afternoon cannot affect the result. Mrs Robinson boat Miss Gaisforcl, 2 up ; Miss Macleocl beat Miss Kay, 2 and 1 ; Miss Hammond beat Miss Stevens, 6 and 6; Miss Lnscelles beat Miss Barns-Graham, 2 and 1, The matches were played in almost continuous rain. A strong southerly wind increased soon after the commencement. All the New Zealand players were down in the first half of their games. Miss Stevens in particular having a small chance of retrieving her position, being 4 down and playing badly against Miss Hammond. In the other three games the Australians were hard-pressed to maintain the lead which they had obtained in the first half. Miss Barns-Graham was 3 down at the turn to Miss Eascelles, who was 33 for eight holes. The Gisborne player improved, and squared the game at the fourteenth, but drove into the gully at the next hole. Miss Kay owed her defeat to poor putting in the first half, missing two of 2ft each for a win. On the homeward journey she revealed her real form, playing magnificent approaches, a few of which stayed on the edge of the cup. Had she holed them the New Zealander would have won the holes. . When 3 down at the sixteenth she holed an Byd putt for a 3 to make her 2 down, but the game finished when the next hole was halved. Miss Stevens was out of form against Miss Hammond to lose the first three holes on end. She was 4 down at the turn. Miss Hammond gave her little respite, and the match finished at the thirteenth. Miss Gaisford was also off her game against Mrs Robinson, but the Australian champion played soundly and deserved to win. The match went to the eighteenth hole, where Mrs Robinson increased her advantage to 2 up.
