SATURDAY'S RUGBY

NORTH V. SOUTH ISLAND MATCH After a spell of thirty years, the football enthusiasts of Dunedin are, next Saturday, to be treated once more to the thrills of a North v. South match at Carisbrook. This match has, year after year, provided a great struggle, the scoring usually being high but close. Since the war the North Island hag won nine matches to the South’s three. The South having won by 9-8 in 1922, by 31-30 in 1927, and by 15-14 in 1928. This year the South is considered to have the best chance of winning it has had for years, their forwards as usual being well up to All Black standard, while their hacks, with Simon, Gaffney, Mortlock, and Oliver forming the inside combination, should give a good display. Mr J. Oughton, of Invercarfill, will be the referee, and Messrs . Hayes and E. Clancy line umpires. As a curtain-raiser the annual match for the Walker Shield between Zingari and Matakanui will be played, and an oven hard-fought game is assured. Mr E. Heather will referee this match. The Railway Department is making special _ arrangements to cater for excursionists . from Oamaru and Invercargill. The Artillery Band will render items.

The box plan is now open at Beggs, and will close at 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. _ Official guides, containing detailed information concerning the two teams will be on sale at the Sports Depot, Jacobs’s, and at Carisbrook.
