THE TEXTILE STRIKE PITCHED BATTLE WITH MILITIA Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. BOSTON, September 12. Textile strike violence centred in New England to-night, with several thousand militiamen mobilised in the States of Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Connecticut to suppress raids by pickets on mills. The most serious riots occurred at Saylesvillc, Rhode Island, where 3,000 to 4,000 strikers battled with ini' ':;a and police for hours. Eight were injured as the troops fired point-blank into a mob. Scores more suffered baton injuries or were gassed. The strikers, however, continued to charge, and ripped the gates from the plants, destroyed much property, and attempted -to set fire to buildings before they were repulsed. They also stoned the troops unmercifully with paving blocks. Early on Wednesday morning many strikers concentrated at a cemetery, using memorial stones as a barricade, and defied the troops to dislodge them.
