Major C. H. Dale, 0.8. E., H.M., Commissioner Eastern, African Dependencies,. tells in the August issue of ‘ The P.L.A. Monthly ’ the story of the marvellous changes which have occurred in. the Uganda Protectorate -within a comparatively short time. He says:— “ Few parts of the world have, in so short a time, built up such a romantic history as Uganda. From the early discoveries of Speke, on through -its connection with, pre-Mahdi Sudan, the associations with Gordon and Baker, and Stanley’s . great journey in relief of Emin Pasha, goes the tale. Then comes the early occupation—wars and martyrdom, the building of the ‘Uganda Railway,’ through what is now the great .colony of Kenya, but then only an inhospitable and hostile corridor. After this the wonderful growth of Christianity, marre ( d for » time by. fierce religious, war,- but triumphing over that disaster, and Agoing from strength .to strength. Followed the introduction of cotton, which' brought wealth to a well-endowed land, and with it all the adjuncts of civilisation—schools, • hospitals, motor roads, railways, steamers, and the aeroplane. All this in less than two generations j much of it in one.”.
