ELECTION OF DR BATCHELOR _ To fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Mr Colin M. Gilray, on his departure for Melbourne, Dr Stanley Batchelor has been elected a member of the Council of the University of Otago. There were three candidates—Dr Batchelor, Mr J. S. Fleming, 8.D.5., and Mr T. K. S. Sidey, LL.M.—and the election was conducted by the registrar (Mr H. Chapman). The electors were members of the Court of Convocation, which is composed of graduates of Otago University, and the ballot closed at 5 p.m. yesterday, and resulted : Dr Batchelor 479 votes Mr Fleming 244 votes Mr Sidey 215 votes Informal, 15 votes. The roll was over 2,000, hut only 953 voted. Where votes were ruled invalid, the electors, in most cases, had omitted to sign their names on the envelopes in which the voting paper was enclosed. Dr Batchelor recently retired from the lectureship in clinical surgery at the Medical School after twenty-four years’ service, and he has been on the staff of the Hospital Board for over thirty years.
