JUSTICES OF THE PEACE
PLEASANT SOCIAL FUNCTION A large number of justices of the peace and their wives gathered in Lake’s Restaurant last evening for a pleasant social function. The president of the Justices’ Association (Mr G. W. Watts) was in the chair. An enjoyable musical and elocutionary programme was presented, as follows;—Vocal solo, Mrs Hartley; recitation, Miss M. Walker; vocal solo, Mrs A. Chisholm; piano duet, Misses Johnston ' and Barron; recitations, Miss Edna Lungley; vocal solo. Miss Iris Clark.
Those present were then entertained for half an hour by Mr W. 11. Brugh, who spoke in an interesting manner on the Scottish National War Memorial. There had been some discussion, he said, where the memorial should be erected, and a decision had been finally arrived at to make it part of the wonderful old pile of buildings constituting Edinburgh Castle. The memorial had been constructed so that it would not strike a jarring note in comparison with the buildings that surrounded it, and it was a valuable addition to the stately architecture for which the city of Edinburgh was famous. After describing the exterior of the building, with its myriad symbolic figures, Mr Brugh led his hearers through the Hall of Honour, in which was recorded the part played in the war by the twelve Scottish regiments. He concluded his address with a minute description of the inner shrine, in which reposed a casket, presented by their Majesties tbe King and Queen, containing a list of the names of all the Scottish soldiers who fell in the Great War. On the motion of Mr G. Stratton, Mr Brugh was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address, and a motion of appreciation of the services of the performers was also carried.
