Budge, FUEL FOR THE “ 534.” Attention has been drawn to the fact that in the terms of the financial assistance granted by the British Government to the Cunard-White Star merger there is no stipulation made regarding the use of coal as fuel for the new vessel “ 534.” Stress has been laid on the value to the mining industry of the coal bunkering contract of a vessel of such a size, and it has been suggested that the provision of the necessary mixing and pumping plant for colloidal fuel at such ports as New York, Atontreal, Southampton, and Liverpool should have been made a condition of Government aid. From the point of view of the coal owner there is much to be said for such a proposal, but it is not at all likely that the Government would risk the comment that would arise if it attempted to force the hands of shipowners in regard to the type, of vessel they should build or the fuel they should use. ** The advantages of a pumpable fuel in the ease of large passenger steamers is admittedly great, but there does not seem to be any reason against the employment of colloidal fuel, with which the Cimard Company lias already made extensile and fairly .successful tests.
