THE CAPPING BALL

A BRILLIANT SPEGTACLE The Town Mall '.presented ait animated, and colourful spectacle last night, when the reception and hall "in honour of the 1934 graduates of Otago University was held. A simple but effective decorative scheme added to the beauty of the fine hall. Masses of greenery and pink cherry blossom oil the stage and round the walls gave the appearance of a huge Japanese flowering cherry garden, while dainty pink streamers' swung gently from the gallery'. The guests were received at the entrance by the Chancellor (Mr W. .1; Morrell) and Mrs Morrell, who wore a kingfisher blue velvet frock and carried a ippsy of bronze chrysanthemums, the gift of the Students' Association. They were assisted by Mr Hawksworth (pre-, sident of the Students' Association) and ' Miss Birks (lady' vice-president), who wore a white windswept velvet frock' and: cape and carried a-posy, of violets. Before dancing began the fuests wandered' in the hall,, while 'rank Scofield's orchestra dispensed delightful soft music. The graduates of

the year wove their caps and gowns, a custom that makes this ball different from all others, and one that is remembered by all. The frocks worn by the ladies were very beautiful. Cut on slender clinging lines, many touched the ground, while one or two featured a short train held by a loop while dancing. Silver and gold lame, sequins, and brilliants made vivid splashes here and 'there when they were used for trimming, while one lovely frock was of silver lame with black velvet flowers. Another effective three-quarter length of plain gold lame was worn over a soft gold organdie frock.
