POLICE COURT

WEDNESDAY, MAY IC. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) CHARGE DENIED. A charge of stealing an eiderdown quilt, valued at 30s, the property of the Byrd Expedition, was denied by an American, Lawrence Henry Kennedy (40). ' A remand for a week was granted to allow the police to make further investigations. ■ ■ , ; When Kennedy applied for bail, Chief-detective Young said a considerable amount of stealing had taken place on the Bear of Oakland. Kennedy had been drinking heavily, and, in his own interests, he should be kept in custody. Bail was refused. OHIOKET FUNDS STOLEN.

John Herbert Findlay (41) pleaded guilty to the theft, on September 5 last, of £6 Is, the property of the Tomahawk Cricket Club. During the last cricket season, said Chief-detective Young, Findlay was secretary of the Tomahawk Club. There was reason to believe that he had not accounted for all the funds, and a deficiency of £6 Is was discoverd. Every attempt was made to have the matter squared up, but it was to no purpose. On the theft being reported to the police, a -warrant was issued,-and Findlay was arrested in the Ranfurly district, where he was rabbiting. He was living with a woman who was on probation for theft. Accused said the non-payment of the funds was “sheer pig-headedness on his part. Several people at Tomahawk were “ giving him a go,” and he decided to “have a go at them.’ ' The Magistrate: I do not understand “ There was no intention on my part of not paying the balance,” explained Findlay. “1 am prepared to pay it He was remanded till Saturday for. the probation officer’s report.

THEFT OF TOOLS. Two charges of theft of tools, of a total value of £4 2s, the property of Joseph Sparrow and Sons and William M‘Lean, were admitted by Robert Ross Duncan (22). , , For some time past Sparrow- and Sons had been losing tools from, the works, said Chief-detective _ Young. Eventually complaints were made to the police, and inquiries were made by Constable Wells, with the result that the tools were found at accused s premises. He admitted stealing from his employers. A quantity of tools belonging to a fellow-worker were also found. Accused was a boilermaker, and was supporting his mother. Of course he would lose his position. , Accused was remanded till Saturday for a report by the probation officer.
