TAIERI RIVER TRUST

MONTHLY MEETING The Taieri River Trust held its monthly meeting yesterday; present Messrs T. M. Ball (chairman), C. Findlay, F. Johnson, W. J. Marshall, Jas. Dow, S. Snell, and H. IV. Wilson. REPORTS. The Inspector reported that the following work had been completed during the month: —Forty chains of the neTv cut had been dragged. The Mauugatua drain had been cleaned for a distance of 120 chains. Sixty chains of B drain had been cut, dragged, and deepened. Three planks had been inserted in the bridge over the Otokia drain. The box at Smith’s property, Berkeley, had been Mr Marshall’s gang had cleaned 25 chains of the new cut, 135 chains of Lee Creek, and the wafer supply for 12 chains. Fortv chains of Loch Katrine had been shovelled out, and 35 chains had been dragged. 'The usual attention had been given to the banks. —The report was received. . The Works Committee’s chairman (Mr Johnson) reported that the following decision had been arrived at: —(1) The lower gang would finish B drain and then proceed to Maungatua drain, thence to IVain’s drain and Poplar drain. (2) That a 24ft 12in pipe be put across Poplar road to improve the drainage of Mr F. Lyder’s block, Mr Lyder to pay half-cost of the pipes. The schedule drain from the pumping station to Mr Wilson’s boundary was also to be cleaned, and after that Kirk’s drain to.the Otokia road. (3) The drain from Lake Ascog to Lee Creek was also in bad order because ot grass growth, and needed attention. ■ The report was adopted. CORRESPONDEN CE, Mr W. Bryant, Otokia, requested that his property receive adequate drainage. 0 drain and OtokiaMaungatua drain would assist in draining the farm.—lt was decided to attend to C drain as soon as circumstances permitted. . Mr Win. Baird, Momoua, pointed out that the clearing that had been commenced of gorsc in the river bed at Allanton was unfinished. There was also a belt of willow trees left uncut at a particularly bad bend. — The Woi-ks Committee was asked to include these matters in its inspection of the gorse areas. Messrs Lawson Bros, asked that tne culvert in the Momona drain through their property be renewed. —The inspector to attend to the matter. The district engineer. Public W orks Department, Dunedin, wrote in connection with drainage matters at Henley. The following resolution was passed . “That the trust did not require pipes under A drain, hut in lieu thereof it considered that connections between the borrow-pits lie made into open drains of sufficient capacity, to dis-

charge the water passing through B drain road, when a 3ft pipe was installed, and suggested that, possibly, connections between the borrow-pits might be'used to provide an outlet for B drain road, giving the same a greater waterwav than the 3ft pipe proposed, in lieu of the suggested payment of Is per acre. ■ The trust would need to be consulted before leases were renewed, it being intended that this agreement hold only as far as present leases were concerned.” „ T , The Under-Secretary Public Works Department, Wellington, acknowledged receipt of part payment of the loaii under the Tiileri 11 iver Trust Amendment Act, 1932-33, and asked when the balance would be paid.-—The department to be informed that the instalments would be paid as rates had been collected. , , Mr 11. S. Frapwell wrote on behalf of a client who required to fence a property, leased by him from the trust. The adjoining lessee had not so far arranged to erect his share of the type of fence the ' writer’s client desired.—A reply to be sent stating that the trust would pay half-cost of the standard fence, according to the fencing Act, erected under the inspector s approval, in the meantime. The other lessee to be given notice that if his lease was not signed by May 22 his lease would be forfeited, half the cost of the fence to be x )a id before signing took place. , ~ Messrs Hay and Thomson requested a remission of rates for a client, owing to matters being held up by legal disputes.—Granted -under the unusual conditions which existed. The Blazer Firewood Company, Dunedin, applied for permission, to cut the willow trees on the trust’s chain reserve below the Otoikia bridge.Granted, provided that no branches be allowed to fall into the river and that qll refuse be burnt, the property holders to be consulted. ‘ Messrs Duncan and Macgregor wrote (a) forwarding the results of the hearing of the recent appeals against the “ Couston ” classification. They enclosed the original classification showing the further amendments by the magistrate ; (b) notifying the collection of portion of an outstanding account foi rates; (c) the solicitors hffd made efforts to obtain a new certificate of title on a deceased estate, but so far matters had not been completed; (a) legal argument with the magistrate bad been held in connection with the “ Berwick ” appeals against the amendment to live drainage classification. After a discussion it was decided as follows; — (a) Received: (b) the solicitor’s action confirmed : (c) the ipformation received and the matter to'be brought up at next meeting; (dV received. - Mr W. D. Bell. Woodside. requested on behalf of fellow-relief workers in West Taieri and Henley-Berwick groups, for a reinstatement of the half-hour reduction in the working day for the months of May to August.—Declined until after consideration of the estimates. RATES. The secretary was instructed to prepare the estimates for the next meeting. The drainage rate to be at Is 6d” the administrative rate at lOd. according as the estimates are altered at this meeting.

AMENDMENT TO DRAINAGE CLASSIFICATION. The following resolutions, due notice of which had been given by Cr T. M. Ball, were passed ‘ 1 That the resolution of the trust passed at the meeting held'on December 4.-1933, making an amendment to the drainage classification of the trust of August, 1921, be rescinded, and that the resolution of the trust of January 15. 1934, instructing the trust’s solicitors, to act m the hearing of the appeals against the said amendment, together with_ all or any other resolutions dealing in any way with the said amendment be rescinded. -
