WRESTLING

MEYER BEATS SANTEN (Pm United Press Association.l AUCKLAND, May 14., The second match of the season, in Auckland at the Town Hall to-night was much more lively and full of action than that of the previous week. The contestants were Dr Fred Meyer and Charlie San ten, two recent arrivals from America. Meyer won by two falls to one. Both were gained by submissions to hammerlocks, whereas Santeu pinned his opponent after an aeroplane spin and slam. Meyer’s falls were gained in the third and sixth rounds, while Santen secured his in the fifth round. Rough methods were used by both throughout, but the crowd,; which was not so large as usual, was definitely on Santen’s side. He was loudly cheered for employing tactics which brought storms of hooting to Meyer. SHIKINA BEATS MAMOS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 14. By the only fall of the match, Oki Shikina beat Harry Mamos in a professional encounter at the. Town Hall to-night. The fall came 1 as a surprise in the seventh round. When Mamos lifted his opponent for an aeroplane spin he collided with the referee and fell to the canvas with the Japanese on top. Shikina had no difficulty in pinning him. It was strenuous wrestling, but not very interesting. Mamos was twice admonished by the referee and booed by the crowd. OKI SHIKIHA V. HARRY MAMOS To-morrow the season will be commenced in Dunedin, when Oki Shikina, the Japanese catch-as-catch-can wrestler, will meet the old favourite, Harry Mamos. Something new- in wrestling will be seen for the last three rounds of the bout will be in Japan’s own national style, jiu-jitsu. Shikina is, of course, an expert exponent of his national style, but it must be said that he learned it only on his return to his mother country from Honolulu, where he spent his early years. It was in Honolulu as a schoolboy that Shikina first learned the rudiments of wrestling, so that one can say that it has been a life-long study. Shikina was hailed last season as the coming champion of the world, and his old mentor, Taro Miyaka, himself a great wrestler in his day, openly boasts that the young Japanese will soon be the world’s best. Mamos is well-known in New Zealand, and he is claimed to be the cleverest man at his weight ever seen here. He has brains, will power, technique, endurance, and speed, and he, too, has made a special study of .jiu-jitsu. There will be the usual amateur preliminaries and musical numbers w-ill be supplied through the courtesy ’of Mr S. Veitch.
