THE TAIERI AND PENINSULA MILK SUPPLY COMPANY LTD.

Fifty years ago this company was established with the object of vending milk, and many changes have taken place since that time. In the consumers’ interest a modern bottle cashing and bottle filling plant was installed for delivery of rank in the city. A special room is equipped for this purpose. The milk for townsupplyis received from the surrounding districts. A visit to the factory will show the milk being unloaded from; a six-ton Dennis lorry which has just arrived at the receiving stage, the floor of which is of iron plates set in concrete, this being the only material . which will stand up to the wear where such a large amount of produce is handled. The milk is then taken in charge by the foreman of the receiving stage. The milk is here graded, selected, and tested, only that which is suitable for town supply being put through the pasteurizers, the remainder being set aside for manufacturing purposes. The milk is weighed in two huge scales, which have been specially installed and which are the very best obtainable for this particular work. Once milk has been through the pasteurizers it is carried to the huge cooler, over which it flows, and wnen it reaches the bottom of the cooler the temperature is recorded as from 40deg to 45deg. On leaving the cooler the milk is run into cans tor bulk delivery. The milk for bottling is run from the cooler into a specially laid out bottling room. In this room is located the bottle washing machine which sterilises the bottles which are immediately taken from the machine and placed on the bottle filler, where they are automatically filled and capped by this ingenious machine. The bottles are then placed in the crates and conveyed to the coo\ room, where they are held until required for delivery. The premises are open for inspection, and are well worth a visit.
