MR M. J. SAVAGE

Leader of the Opposition, says; “The most logical alternative to quota restrictions on New Zealand Exports is to build the Home Market.

Mr Savage continues: “ Workl movements appear, at the moment, to make this inevitable. Unless \vc can sell, at economic prices, increasing quantities of primary products in external markets we must give greater attention to building in our own country. * The object of those who are responsible for MADE IN NEW ZEALAND WEEK is to: (a) Prove beyond reasonable doubt that New Zealand manufactures are equal to anything in the world; (b) provide employment for this generation and the generations to come; and (c) lay a substantial foundation for a return to national prosperity by de-

veloping the home market for New Zealand products. In my opinion the time has come for definite planning and the establishing of bettor balance in the industrial life of the dominion. Every purchaser of New Zealandmade goods will be playing an essential part in that direction. My appeal to citizens is not based upon sentiment, but upon the facts as they appear to me. Our first duty is to provide remunerative employment for our own people, and unless we can depend upon New Zealanders to patronise New' Zea-land-made goods the task of those who have already made wonderful

progress against adverse conditions will bo much harder. The solution of the economic problems facing New Zealand day will be within reach of Now Zealand citizens when they learn the simple lesson of planning to produce what they need, and giving preference to the products of their own country. While we are ashing' others to 'give preference to dominion products it is not too much to expect that New Zealanders will lead the way. My best wishes go out to those who'arc engaged in the building of New Zealand industries, and I appeal to all citizens to play their part in making the object of Made in New Zealand Week an unqualified success. , '
