Storm came to Dunedin from Port Chalmers last night, but her loading was delayed by rain and she is now ■scheduled to sail to-night for Wanganui via ports. Gale is due on Thursday from Bluff and is to sail the same day for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, AA’anganui. and New Plymouth. ' Wingatui was scheduled to leave Wellington to-dav for Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is due on Thursday afternoon. Kaimai was to leave Wellington today and is due on Friday, when she will complete discharge and load for Westport. ■ . . ... Opihi is to leave Wellington on Saturday ami . is to load at Dunedin on Monday for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth. Waipiata is to leave Auckland on Eridav for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is due on May 1(5. John is due to-morrow and is to sail the same day for Wellington, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport. Parera is to arrive to-morrow from WeilingLon and sail the -same day for Bluff. " She will return on Friday to load for the north. Mini was to leave Auckland yesterday with explosives for Port Chalmers. She is due about the end of the week, and alter discharge will come to Dunedin to load for Auckland. TAR ANAKI TO-MOK R OW 7 . The Taranaki is expected off the Heads this evening from London via Suva, and should berth at Dunedin tomorrow morning to discharge the local portion of her cargo. INTERISLAND SERVICE. The intensland express steamer Rangatira reached Lyttelton from W ellington at 7.30 a.m. to-day. Passengers and mail for the south connected with the express. MONTEREY AT SUVA. The Matsoir liner Monterey, eu route from Auckland to San Francisco, reached Suva this morning. WESTMORELA ND LEAVES CURACAO. The Now Zealand Shipping Company has received advice that the Westmoreland, en route from Liverpool L*. ballast, cleared Caracas Bay on Wednesday.' She is due at Wellington on May 28 to commence her Homeward loading. SHEAF CROWN TO REPLACE PORT HARDY. The chartered steamer Sheaf Crown will now replace the Port Hardy, which was to leave New York on May 19 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttel ton, and Dunedin. She is of 4,868 tons gross, and is owned by the Sheat Steam Shipping Company. Built in 1929, she and the Sheaf Holme, a sister ship, are' the newest vessels of the line. PORT HOBART SAILS. i Having discharged the Dunedin por- I tion of her general cargo from Liver-| pool, the C. and D. Line’s motor ship Port Hobart sailed yesterday afternoon for New Plymouth to complete discharge. The vessel will commence ■Homeward loading at the Taranaki port. MAUNGANUI AT SAN FRANCISCO. The Union Company’s R.M.S. Maungaum, from Sydney and Wellington, arrived at San Francisco on May 4. She will leave the Californian port tomorrow for Papeete, Rarotonga, Wellington, and Sydney, and is due at Wellington on May 28. CARGO FROM THE EAST. The Narbada is due at Auckland tomorrow from Calcutta, Rangoon, Penang, Singapore, and Samarang. The vessel’s cargo of Eastern produce is for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. THE CANADIAN LEADER. The Canadian Leader left Halifax on April 29 for Auckland, Wellington, and Australia. She is due at Auckland on Juno 4 and at Wellington on June

THE TROJAN STAR. On her first visit to Auckland, the Blue Star Line steamer Trojan Star arrived last Wednesday morning from Napier to complete loading. She was scheduled to sail yesterday for Loudon, via Panama. The Trojan Star is' a sister ship to the Federal Line steamer Devon. The Trojan Star’s tonnage is 9,002 gross and the Devon’s is 9,010 gross. Both vessels were built at Dunkirk. France, in 1916. The Trojan Star’s former name was La Perouse. WIRELESS FROM REMUERA. , A wireless message received by the New Zealand Shipping Company from the captain of the Remuera states that the vessel is expected to arrive at Auckland next Monday morning from London. The Remuera left London on April 6. SHIP WELDING. Failure to bring about an agreement at the recent conference between the Shipbuilding Employers’ Federation and the shipyard trade unions, has resulted in the employers announcing their intention of putting their welding scheme into operation in shipyards throughout the industry from the beginning of April. The decision of the Employers’ Federation was conveyed to the trade unions, who, although stating they were not opposed to evolution of new operations in the shipyards, were very strongly opposed to the method of introducing this class of labour in the yards. There appears to be considerable difference of opinion among some of the unions on questions of policy in regard to the operation of the scheme ; but it is not expected that there will be any serious dislocation of the industry after the employers’ notice takes effect. NORWEGIAN SHIPS. X Although well supplied with shipyards, Norway has not the capacity for building large vessels, which, when (hey are wanted, are usually ordered from abroad, chiefly in England or Germany. The eleven vessels building in Norwegian yards at present are all relativelv small, ranging from 1,500 tons to 4,000 tons d.w.. and tlm fact that Norwegian owners are acquiring more vessels of these sizes should not he lost on British owners, for there is a growing scarcity of vessels of between 3.000 and 4.000 tons, especially in the British carrying fleet. The tendency in Great Britain of late years has been to build tramp steamers of what was considered a more economical size, usually from 7,000 to 9,000 tons. So many ships of the smaller size have been sold abroad, or for breaking-up purposes in recent years, that it may he to British owners' interests to consider the building of handier-sized vessels to take their place.
