DUNEDIN BRANCH . The annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the British' Music Society (N.Z. section) was held in •. Messrs C. Begg-and Co.’s Concert Chamber on Friday evening last. Dr Galway presided, and in the course of his remarks' spoke of the varied and .interesting nature of the programmes presented during the year. Many compositions had been given their first public performance in Dunedin. It was the aim of the society to. introduce a proportion of modern British music at each meeting. The annual report stated that the branch had completed its first year with a membership of fifty-two. At the first meeting a programme of clmmbei music by modern composers was presented by Mesdames M. C. Campuell, Porter, and Moffett, and a song’cycle was sung by Mr E. Benton. The lion. • organiser: oft the New Zealand section of the' society ) (Aliss Valerie Corliss), was present oh that occasion and addressed members. The visiting delegates to the Music Teachers’ Association’s conference were guests of the branch at that meeting. At the second -meeting .in '.August Airs Porter. Aliss Ethel Wallace, -and Dr G'alway pliiyeu Purcell’s ‘.Golden' Sonata,’ Aliss Evelyn Shepard and Aliss Wallace contributing items by Bacli, while Aliss Aloda Paine, Mr Max Scherek, Aliss Wallace, and Air Lloyd Hunter’s contributions were from modern British and French composers. The third meeting in November was devoted to a piano work of Bach’s, played by Miss Alary Fraser, a group ol madrigals and of modern British part songs by the Oriana Choir (conductor, Aliss Jda White), a Brahms trio by Mesdames Campbell, Porter, and Aloffett, Schubert songs “by Mine Annette Chapman, and modern piano music by Mrs H. C. Campbell. The last meeting lor the year consisted of Kootharn’s sonata for flute and piano by Messrs Vernon Griffiths and J. W. Stewart, a sonata for ’cello and piano (Brahms) by Aliss Elvira Wycherley and Dr Galway, songs by Franz, and Cesar Franck by Air A. Walmsley. Ow,mg to the indisposition of Aliss Alary Pratt her place as singer was taken at short notice by Aliss Jess Al’Alillan. The evening .finished with a very enjoyable performance of the “ Trout ” Quintet by Aliss E. Wallace and Alessrs Scherek, Nimino, Lloyd .Hunter, and A. H. Pettitt. All the meetings were well attended. The committee expressed its appreciation of the services of those .members who provided the musical programmes. During the year Air Thomas Kite’llie found it necessary to resign from the committee owing to his departure for England. Mis resignation was received with regret, but the committee decided to leave the lilting of- the vacancy till the annual meeting. The onerous duties of secretary wore performed by Aliss Ida White, to whom, for her conscientious work, the society is deeply indebted. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3 19s lid.
