Mr S. Ritchie (Conciliation Commissioner) left for Christchurch by the first express this morning. Mr A. Walker, general manager of Messrs Gordon and Gotch, who has been on a business visit to Dunedin, left this morning on his return to Wellington. Mr R. A. Anderson, of Invercargill, came to Dunedin yesterday afternoon, and went back by motor to-day. Mr Maurice Kain, who has been engaged in mining in the Malay States, recently came to revisit Otago relatives, and left this morning to go back to the East.

Mr W. Stuart Wilson left by the 11.35 train to-day, returning to Wellington. Mr Hugh Walpole, the distinguished novelist and literary critic, expects next year to visit Auckland, where he was born in 1884, and sent to England to be educated at the age of five.—Auckland correspondent. Mr James Compton, of Queensland, has been appointed conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band. A notice in the ‘ Gazette,’ which was issued last night, announces the appointment of Messrs W. E. Arnold and N. T. Lambourne to the Teachers’ Superannuation Board. From forty-four applications received from all over New Zealand Mr John Norman Millard, M.Sc., 8.A., has been appointed head master of the Hutt Valley High School in place of Mr H. P. Kidson, who will leave at the end of the year to take up the position of rector of the Otago Boys’ High School. Mr Millai'd has been first assistant at the high school for the past seven years and head of the department of mathematics and science.

Appreciation of the good service rendered by the retiring Under-Secretary of Mines, Mr A. H. Kimbell, was expressed at a farewell gathering in the Department of Mines in Wellington yesterday. On behalf of the staff, the Minister of Mines (Hon. C. E. Macmillan) presented Mr Kimbell with a gold cigarette lighter and a handbag for Mrs Kimbell. Replying, Mr Kimbell said the public had not appreciated as it should the excellent work done by the department. In 1919, when he joined the' department, 600 letters and telegrams had been despatched. In 1932 this number bad grown to 2,100, yet the staff, which in 1919 had numbered 127, with salaries totalling - £23,880, was now sixty-nine, with salaries totalling £17,276. Arrangements for the disposition of the staff'of the Auckland Training College while it is closed next year have been made by the Education Department. Mr D. M. Ene, principal, will act as inspector of schools, and Mr F. C. Lopdell, vice-principal, as temporary inspector of schools, both with headquarters at Auckland. Two of the staff will be attached to the University College, one to the Auckland Museum, and the others are given various duties in secondary or primary schools. —Press Association.

A Gisborne Press Association telegram records the death of Mr Oswald Prince, manager of the Gisborne Gas Company, who was associated with various sporting bodies.
