MR BAXTER’S COMMENT.
TO THE EDITOR. ‘Sir, —lu reply to “ J.M.M.’s ” onesided comment on the above in tonight’s issue, I suggest that he removes some of the cobwebs from his eyes in order that* he may see past his nose. “ J.M.M.” does not approve of “ farmers ” and “ business people ” owning American cars. .Why? Does “J.M.M.” .realise that if we want to keep markets open in America for such goods as wool, skins, etc., we must respond by creating a market for American goods? Kyen in to-night’s paper I read that there is a possibility of our opening a market in America for Delicious apples. “ J.M.M.” evidently is down on the “ Yanks ” for some unknown reason, or is it merely jealousy or envy? Hoping that “'J.M.M.” will in the future take a broader view of such matters before voicing his opinion.—I am, etc., Libttrtus. November 14.
TO THE EDITOR. Six - , —l quite agree with “ J.M.M.” as to the purchasing of American ears,' trucks, radios, washing machines, and other machinery too numerous to enumerate by farmers and other citizens, including social bodies throughout New Zealand. It is very amusing to see some of our leading retail firms placarding their windows, perhaps once a year, with the slogan “ Buy Britishmade goods and New Zealand-made goodsj” whereas some of them buy American cars, etc. Great Britain is by far our largest customer in our primary products, millions of pounds coming into New Zealand every year from the Old Country. During the last thirty years untold millions of pounds have left New Zealand for America, but America buys practically nothing from New Zealand in return. I say: Trade with a country that trades with you. The Argentine and Denmark and some other countries trade fairly generously with Great Britain in return. Of course, I know there is only one way, and that is to put a higher tariff on all American goods.—l am, etc., Observant. November 15.
