The Middlemarch Unemployment Committee advised that, owing to the increased opportunities for more constant work in seasonal occupations, it had been decided to suspend the operation of the No. 5 scheme in connection with tho clearing work on Clark’s Creek. The hoard decided to advise its tenants to keep the creek cleared. RECTOR’S REPORT. The Rector (Mr W. J. Morrell) reported that the total number now upon the school roll was 672, including 276 seniors, 383 juniors, and thirteen paying pupils. The corresponding totals for November, 1928-32 were respectively 662, 635, 662, 732, and 698. Tho annual athletic sports held at Carisbrook on October 18 passed off most successfully in every respect, except that the attendance of narents was somewhat disappointing. The weather, though rather variable in the morning, was very fine in the afternoon, and the condition of the ground excellent. As for some years past, an overwhelming proportion of the boys took part in one or more events on the sports day or in the preliminaries held at the school on October 6 and other days. The competition was very keen, and most of the finishes very close. No fewer than seven previous records were broken, and one more equalled. In two instances the nolo vault and the long jump under fifteen, the first two competitors both broke the record. In the 100yds under fifteen, C. P. Ombler (llsec) lowered a record which had stood since 1885. The general level of performance was distinctly good, and the jumping, both in broad and high jump, was the best for several years. The Sinclair Challenge Cup for the senior championship was won, after a good contest, by R. G. Mahony. witli G. M. Spence second: for the junior cup there was a tie between A. Geary and C. P. Ombler, each of whom will hold the cup for six months. The keenness of the junior contest was indicated by another tie for {third place. The Mallard Challenge {Shield for senior relay was won by Lower Modern V.a. rfonn, L.M.V.b coming second; tho Stuart Hawthorne Shield for junior relay by IV.a, with IV. b second. Both events as usual elicited close struggles. The form championship banner for the greatest number of points gained in proportion to numbers (athletic and swimming sports combined) was won by Upper V. IV.b coining second. The best first-year form was lII.a These results, with the fact that the forms coming third, fourth, and fifth wore Upper V.a, Modern V.a, and Lower Mod. V.a, might be of some interest in connection with the-brief discussion in Dr Lawson’s Wilding Memorial Lecture on 'The Physical Aspect of Education in Relation to Social Life,’ and his statement that “-there is a marked correlation between physical energy and intelligence.” While there might be occasion exceptions, his experience is that the forms doing best in school work (A-and B forms) were usually well up, in proportion to their age and weight, iu tho various physical activities of school life. Thanks of the school were due to the ladies who so kindly gave their services in tho tea room, to senior pupils of the Girls’ High School for useful assistance, and to many friends for gifts of material for the ten. Ho also thanked tho old boys who acted ns judges, and Dr Evans for his donation to the sports prize fund. Tho Rosevear Memorial Cup for the crosscountry race run on October 27 was won by B. G. Johnston (18min 12sec). There was a good field of competitors. On November 2 Mr S. G. Pether, secretary Otago branch Navy League, gave a brief and interesting address on_ flic history and work of the British Navy, and its value to the Empire. THE GIRLS’ SCHOOL. The Lady Principal reported that the roll number was as follows: —Senior free place, 148; junior free place, 351; paying pupils, 3; a total of 502. Comparative totals were: 1932, 519; 1931. 466; 1930, 439; 1929, 413. The annual sports were held on October 27. The weather was very fine, and the programme carried through successfully.
