Mr R. H. Neilson left for Queenstown by the south express this morning. Mr A. C. Cameron was a passenger for Christchurch by the first express this morning. Mr T. Paterson, who has been visiting Dunedin, left on ins return to Christchurch this morning. Mr R. W. Coupland, of the Dunedin* branch of the Tourist Department, is on leave, and went to-day to Christchurch, Mr A, G, Hill taking charge temporarily. Mr Mark Hanau was a passenger for Wellington by this morning’s express. Miss Elsa J acobs and her brother Hal left this morning for Wellington. Mr A. W. G. Dunningham, 8.A., recently appointed as librarian by the Dunedin City Council, is expected to report here for duty on October 1. At the annual meeting of the Otago Justices of the Peace Association held last night reference was made to the deaths of Messrs James Horn, H. L,Tapley, M. Stevenson, and G. Lawrence, all of whom had been members of the association. Votes of condolence with the were passed, the members standing in silence. At the Wellington Competition Soxiety’s festival yesterday Miss Nellie Henaghan, of Dunedin, secured second place in the recitation (lady or gentleman) for the scholarship. During the week Miss Henaghan also gained first place in the character sketch and second place in reading at sight. Mr J.E. Davies, of Dunedin, gained first place in the English folk song. After forty years’ service Mr W. J.Gow, second assistant secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, retired yesterday, and was accorded a farewell by a large number of officers from all branches of the department. In the absence of the Minister (Mr A. Hamilton), the Secretary of the General Post Office (Mr G. M'Namara) presented Mr Gow with, a radio set and a travelling bag, and a handbag for Mrs Gow. Mr Gow intends to live at Auckland. Mr S. Gambrill, senior clerk at the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey, has been promoted to the position of chief clerk in place of Mr J. R. M'Cormick, who has retired after forty years’ service. Mr R. W. Cooper has been appointed to succeed Mr Gambrill as senior clerk., Mr M'Cormick was accorded a farewell, by the staff yesterday. He carried out a large amount of important work in connection with the consolidation of the land laws, 1924-25, On the eve of his retirement on superannuation from the Railway Service after having completed thirty-five years Mr J. Cockburn, of the car and wagon depot staff, was met yesterday and presented with a solid leather suit case as a token of the esteem in which he was held by his fellow-workers. Mr P. Duncan, car and wagon inspector,in making the presentation, spoke in eulogistic terms < of Mr Cockhurn’a many good qualities, both, as a worker and shop mate. He emphasised the fact that during his thirty-five years’, service Mr Cockburn had never had a disagreement with his work mates or officers of the department. In conclusion he wished Mr Cockburn long life in his retirement. Messrs L. Latimer (sub-foreman), A. Ward (A.S.R.S.), C. Frye (Tradesmen’s Association), MTntyre, and Morrison also referred to the recipient’s good qualities. The death took place at Wellington yesterday of Mr H. L. Binney, secretary of the head office of the Commercial Union Assurance Company Ltd.since 1929. The deceased joined the Dunedin branch in 1905. He served in the artillery during the war, suffering disabilities "from which he never fully recovered.
