CHAIR OF PHILOSOPHY

DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF MR FINDLAY

UNIVERSITY CONCURS IN APPOINTMENT

The council of the University of Otago at a special meeting yesterday concurred in the appointment of Mr J. X. Findlay, M.A., to the chair of philosophy. Mr Findlay is 29 years of age, a South African by birth, and has had a distinguished academic career. After taking his M.A. in philosophy at Pretoria he proceeded to Balliol College,Oxford, as Transvaal Rhodes Scholar for 1924, where he obtained first class honours in Literae Humaniores (philosophy and ancient history). After doing research work in philosophy he returned to Pretoria in 1927 as lecturer in philosophy, which position he still holds. He is strongly recommended by, the distinguished authority in his subject who acted with the High Commissioner for New Zealand as advisers on applications received in Loudon. His application was cordially supported by testimonials from Mr A. D. Lindsay (master of Balliol), Professor Macmurray (University of Loudon), Emeritus Professor Muirhead (Birmingham), and others. Special mention is made of a work on ■ philosophy written by Mr Findlay which has just been published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford, and there is every reason to hope that his future work will bring great credit to the chair to which he has been appointed. The following resolutions were passed by the council: presses its appreciation of the manner in which the University has been taken into consultation by the Presbyterian Church Board of Property in all tbo proceedings relating to this appointment." “ The council expresses its cordial thanks to the High Commissioner for New Zealand and those who co-operated with him as advisers for the very thorough and sympathetic manner in which they dealt with the applications received in England.” -
