CONFISCATED SILVER
QUESTION OF OWNERSHIP Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, August 31. (Received August 31, at 10 a.m.)' A claim lias been lodged on behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Company., for the English silver coin on thoj ground that the silver found is its pro- : perty. The Victorian Collector of Ous-; toms, who has had charge of it since tho silver was confiscated, says that no one has yet claimed ownership, though it is understood that the New Zealand Government has submitted a claim. [The cargo steamer Piako, from New Zealand, was searched on arrival at Melbourne, and £293 worth of English silver was discovered secreted in the vessel’s forepeak. The Customs seized the monev. It was stated that Mr L. J. Schmitt, New Zealand Trade Commissioner, in accordance with cabled instructions from Mr Coates, had lodged ■ a claim with the Customs authorities under section 32 of the Finance Act, 1930, for the return of the silver. Under the Act the silver becomes the property of the New Zealand Government.] •
