AN AUCKLAND MYSTERY. Early this morning a doctor was called to a bouse in Grange road, Mount Eden, and there found John Shaw Gordon, aged sixty .-eight, with a wound in his throat and his wife. Nellie Gordon, aged sixtyfive. suffering from severe head injuries. Both were sent to the hospital. It was reported at noon that the wife is expected to recover. but tbo man’s condition is critical. The injuries to the couple are believed to liavo been inflicted with a razor and a hammer.— Auckland Press Association.

THE FREIGHT CONTRACT. The Meat Producers’ Board and the Dairy Produce Board announce a new shipping freight contract for a term of throe years from September 1 next. It provides for an extra six per cent, off the basic rates, making the total reductions off tlie basic rates 21 per cent. The new rates represent 7.05 off the present contract rates and mean a saving to the producers of approximately £300,000 per annum—approximately £IBO,OOO for meat and £124,000 for dairy produce. The Blue Star Line participates in the contract for 10 per cent, of the refrigerated cargo. Provision is also made for the carriage of chilled beef, and tho companies have agreed to improve tho regularity of the services by increasing the number of time-table steamers.—Wellington Press Association telegram. NEXT YEAR’S SESSION. Tho Government is considering the advisability of an early session next year owing to the impossibility of dealing with the tariff re- . vision at the forthcoming sitting of Parliament. The proposal is to meet about Ala roll and continue until all the business of tho main session has been completed.—Wellington correspondent.
