SHORTAGE OF RENNET
HOLD-UP OF CHEESE INDUSTRY THREATENED DAIRY COMPANIES IN SERIOUS POSITION [Per United Press Association.] ELTHAM, December 22. The cheese industry of New Zealand is threatened with a serious hold-up through a shortage of rennet supplies. Dairy companies throughout Taranaki have received a circular from Wellington to tho effect that owing to the export of the dominion’s available supply of veils there is now no raw material in the country to manufacture the rennet necessary to cope with the extra output of cheese. This acute shortage was foreshadowed some months ago both by the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company Ltd. and by a deputation from the dairying interests to Cabinet Ministers, when it was pointed out that it was essential that all veils in the country should be retained. No action was taken by Cabinet, and consequently veils sufficient for half a year’s output of cheese were exported by overseas meat interests. It is understood that foreign rennet is being hurried to New Zealand, but it is questionable whether it will arrive in time.
