ROWING ASSOCIATION

ARRANGEMENTS FDR REGATTAS PROGRAMME FOR WAIHOLA Arrangements in connection with several forthcoming regattas comprised the business at a short meeting of the Otago Amateur Rowing Association last evening. Acceding to a request from the Waihola Sports Society, it was decided to put rowing on the programme at the next gala day, four fouroared races to be held. Since 1912, it was stated, rowing had not been contested on the lake, and it was to be hoped that if the reinstatement this year proved successful rowing would become an annual attraction at Waihola.

Mr C, R. Caffin presided over the following delegates;—Messrs J. P. I Vallis (secretary), S. G. Styche, If. | Brough (Otago Club), W. G. Glengarry. P. Verngreeu (North End), H. G. M'Alpino (University), W. Robinson. M. T. Budd (Macandrew Bay). T. F. Mackie, J. E. Colthorpe, W. Lysaght (Port Chalmers), L. R. Fountain (Queen’s Drive), E, W. Picfcford and E. A. Newman (Oamaru). An inquiry was received from the Waihola Sports Society to ascertain if the association would consent to have rowing included in the programme for its gala day on February 4. Prize money to the value of £2O would be donated. It was decided to support the gala, but to provide only four four-oared events, it being considered that to hold more races would be almost impossible in the limited time. Following was the programme drafted for the occasion;—Youths’ fours, £2 and £1 ; maiden fours, £2 10s and £1; junior fours, £4 and £1 10s; senior fours, £6 and £2. The following list of rowing races for the Port Chalmers regatta on January 21 was submitted by the secretary of the Regatta Committee for approval:— Youths’ sculls. £2 and £1; junior fours, £4 and £1 10s; senior sculls, £3 and £1; youths’ fours, £2 10s and £1; maiden sculls, £2 10s and £1; senior fours (Urn), £8 and £2; junior sculls,. £2 10s and £1; maiden fours, £2 10s and £1;. senior pairs, £3 and £l. “ Except for a reduction in the prize money, the programme is the same as last year’s,” said the Chairman. “It is a very good programme, and the Regatta Committee is to bo congratulated on its enterprise, considering the way things are at present, in offering £6l as prize money.” The programme was approved, and officials to control it were appointed as follow Starter, Mr Caffin ; umpire, Mr Newman; judges—Messrs Styche, Robinson, and Glengarry; N.Z.A.R.A. representative, Mr Mackie. For the £l2 offered as prize money for the Burkes-St. Leonards regatta on February 11 it was decided to grant four four-oared events. The programme was drawn up as follows: —Junior fours, 2.30. £2 and £1; youths’ fours, 3.10, £1 10s and 10s; senior fours, 3.50, £3 10s and £1 10s; maiden fours, 4.30, £1 10s and 10s. The appointment of officials was deferred till the next meeting of the association. It was reported that a fast launch, as requested by the association, would bo provided for the umpire and starter at the Macandrew Bay regatta on Boxing Day. Mr MjAlpine was appointed judge in Mr Lysaght’s place. Mr Charles Johnston (Karitane) wrote stating that tlie holding of a regatta at Karitane on December 27 had been discussed, and it was desired to obtain the views of the association and some idea as to the amount of prize money that would be necessary. The Chairman said that Mr Vallis had been in touch with the writer, but no decision had been reached. An endeavour to get extra concessions from the Railway Department had evidently been unsuccessful, and it had been understood that unless such concessions were received no regatta could be held. It looked as though some fishermen of Karitane had been putting out a “feeler,” but it was now too late to do anything in the matter. Mr Vallis said that he had been unable to get any guarantee as to what amount of prize money would be offered, and so he asked those interested in the fixture to concentrate on one for next year.
